The Yorkie mix is a female who weighs approx. 8lbs. She’s adorable and already spayed. She is playful and needs a special loving home. If you are interested in either of these cute doggies please call Lesley at 909-709-7423. Thankyou

An energetic 8 year old who would love to sit in your lap all day making the cutest grunts and snorts. He is neutered, good with other dogs and people. He has fair sight because he was left out in the sun all day being beat up by the family chow. If interested just respond to this post.

Named so because she was rescued in El Segundo as a stray just before she was to go to Carson shelter. She’s a lab/shepherd mix who is under a year old. She couldn’t be any sweeter. She is spayed, about 35 lbs., and seems to get along with most dogs. Elsie also knows how to sit. She is very energetic so she needs a home where she will get lots of walks. If interested, please respond.

Well it was June 22nd, 5pm, hadn’t fed the dogs yet. My mom went outside with the dogs, our other dog is Sparky. I was inside sitting on the couch and I heard yelping so I looked outside and Pork Chop was writhing on the ground screaming. I ran out and calmed her down and when she did I realized she couldn’t move her back legs. My mom ran inside and called our vet and they said carry her on a towel. Easier said than done. Every time we moved her she screamed so we didn’t move her anymore. My mom called my grandpa who came over and tried to help us pick her up. Didn’t work. My mom kept calling around, an animal ambulance would have taken an hour and a half to get here so that wasn’t an option. She then called another vet who was just minutes away and he sent to of his vet techs in their own car to come and get PC. They were wonderful, they put her on the stretcher without her yelping at all. We drove to the vet where they took x-rays and didn’t find anything. She stayed overnight and they put her on steroids. Next morning they called and she still couldn’t move her left rear leg. The vet told us she’d need to see a specialist. He called around for us and everyone said they couldn’t see her until Mon. It was a Sat. By then the paralysis would be irreversible. Dr. Yoo(PC’s vet) kept calling an found a surgeon in downtown LA named Dr. Shulman. That day my parents drove her down there. I couldn’t go because I was too upset. The Dr. did an MRI and found out she had a slip disc and a pinched nerve which caused the paralysis. While she was still under anestesia, they took her into surgery. We got a call later that day that she was out of surgery and it was successful. PC would stll need physical therapy to regain function of her leg. That Tues. we picked her up and brought her home. Sparky didn’t recognize her because she didn’t smell normal. So, four times a day we did her leg exercises and held her up as she walked and went to the bathroom. About a month after the surgery, she walked on her own. What a beautiful day. Dr. Shulman was shocked at her progress and he said start exercising her so I took her for walks every day.

2 months after her surgery now and she’s completely healed. She probably has %95 percent function of her leg. It will never be %100 but that’s ok. She’s happy and healthy and ready to play with Sparky but can’t for another 2 months. Recently I decided that she is ready to visit nursing homes which she never got to do. Oh yeah and did I mention she has three legs?

Read Bijou’s story to find out more.

Fifty years ago, the City of Rolling Hills Estates, located on the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula, officially became Los Angeles County’s 60th municipality. In that first year in 1957, the City’s population totaled only 3,500, but its new citizens were united in their concern over maintaining its unique rural atmosphere characterized by rolling hills, vast open spaces and three-rail white fences.
You may know me as the author of Bijou’s Story and the poem. I’m a volunteer for Lynne and I adore her dogs and every dog I see. I am also the owner of Pork Chop who is now a therapy dog. I am starting college at Harbor with the aspiration of becoming a veterinary surgeon. After reading a book called “The Nature of Animal Healing”, I have also decided to be a holistic vet as well. I plan on cooking natural foods for my dogs hoping it will make them healthier and happier. Hope all of you enjoy what I write and keep on rescuing animals.

On July 22nd Lynne, her husband, and three friends including me went to the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles to protest the Ringling Brothers’ Circus. Lynne got into contact with the guy running the protest and it was just us five and the guy with his friend. If you’ve ever been to a circus before you know that the animals perform with fear in their eyes. They are whipped during the show though not as much as when they’re being trained. Over 20 elephants have died because of Ringling Brothers’ practices. Remember, if you buy a ticket to any circus with animals, you are supporting animal cruelty.

www.circuses.com

After we protested the circus, we all went to the AR convention 07′. Dozens of rescue groups were there to raise money. A lot of people there were vegans and they had samples too. Here are a couple of Rescue groups’ websites:

Dear Whiskers & Tails Supporters,

Thank you for helping out at the yard sale and/or donating items. We raised $1100+ for the animals in our community. Every penny of it will be put to good use in helping our voiceless animals friends in need. Great thing about volunteers, you don’t have to pay them, so all the money benefits the cause. I was overwhelmed by the support Whiskers & Tails received throughout the week with donations, and the day of the event, everyone showed up and pitched in. What an AWESOME group!!! I was glad to meet many of you that i had spoken to via email or phone, new friendships and supporters, we grow by word of mouth. Your love for animals and generosity made this event the success it was. See you next year! or sooner!

If i forgot someone, please let me know their email address.

I still remember when I was three years old my parents telling me we were going to get a dog. We saw her on TV. Ed McMahon was showing her, trying to get her adopted. Her name was Bijou, a beautiful basenji-greyhound mix. She had been tied up in an abandoned apartment where her owners left her. She was just a puppy, so lack of food made her right front foot grow crooked. We picked her up from the SPCALA and she was very shy at first but warmed up quickly. Her foot straightened out with proper nutrition. Bijou was the perfect dog in every way.

Three years later, my mom, who is a belly dancer, was dancing at a park in Gardena when a cute little white puppy was wandering around inside part of a building. We were looking for a companion for Bijou so it seemed this was fate. Somebody called animal control but my mom brought him home at the end of the day because they never came. In the front of our house was a tree and we tied him up there. I remember he sat on my foot and peed on it. When Bijou and he met it was love at first sight. My mom wanted to name him Casper because he was so white but I didn’t like it so I decided to name him Sparky. Over the years they fell in love. Sparky always licked Bijou’s ears and they slept with their heads on each other.

Within five years we moved to Arizona from California and then back to California. While we were searching for a house the dogs stayed in a kennel. We would visit them every day and take them for walks. We noticed Bijou getting really skinny but thought it was just anxiety from being stuck in a kennel all day. A few days later we asked the people if she was eating and they said no. The vet took x-rays of her stomach and found a large tumor that was preventing her from eating. He said it was most likely cancer so we decided to put her to sleep the following day just weeks before my birthday. Bijou was just nine years old. I remember we took her to our car to say goodbye and my whole family was crying. After about an hour we took her back inside and they took her away. I remember so vividly the look on her face. It was a mix of terror, sadness, and a ‘why am I going back here’ look. That morning was the last time Sparky saw her. It was the worst day of my life and the worst birthday present I ever got.

We moved in to our new house shortly after, the house Bijou never got to see. 6 months later after we had moved on and not particularly looking for a new dog, my mom and I went to Petco and it happened to be Dog Adoption Day. We always just look at the dogs but a certain cute little black dog caught my eye. She was sitting in her cage wagging her tail. Every other dog there was barking except her. We went home and tried to forget about her. A month later it was very close to my birthday so I went to Noah’s Bark’s website, the name of the rescue at Petco, and looked for her picture. She was still there and we found out her name was Pork Chop. She was a two year old black lab mix who’d been adopted out as a puppy but chewed so they left her on the street in Big Bear. She had been hit by a car and lost her right front leg, which she doesn’t miss at all now. Luckily she had a microchip so the rescue was able to find her days before a fire broke out. So now she had been sitting in a cage for one year. We called the rescue and the very next day they brought her over to meet Sparky. We took them on a walk together and they got along great. It was Sparky’s second love at first sight and Porkie’s first. She is the best birthday present I ever got.

It’s now four years later, Sparky is eleven and Pork Chop is six, and she still brings out the puppy in him. Sparky licks her and he lays his head on her. I like to think that Pork Chop is a reincarnation of Bijou. Sometimes when I’m with Pork I feel Bijou is present. They have the same face, to me anyway.

My name is Lauren and I’m now sixteen years old. I’m going to college this year with the intention of becoming a vet. I’ve always loved dogs and am a huge advocate for rescuing an animal. Too many animals lose their lives because there aren’t enough homes for them. I met Lynne, founder of Whiskers N’ Tails, through a friend. I volunteer at her house almost every week and we walk her three rescue dogs as well. Through her I found Pal Rescue which is where my mom and I used to walk dogs awaiting loving homes. Fortunately, all the dogs we walked have found homes now so we don’t have that job anymore.

Recently, Pork Chop passed her therapy dog test so she can visit hospitals and nursing homes. She was absolutely perfect during the test which we took at the SPCALA. They petted her roughly, yelled at her to see her reaction, did basic obedience, and when one tester got in a wheelchair she sat in between his legs.

To everyone who is reading this, please rescue an animal instead of buying. They’re healthier, more loving because you’ve saved them, and incredibly cheaper for the same love and affection. Also please spay and neuter. This is important to prevent pet overpopulation and it makes your dog healthier.

Yesterday, Lauren my compassionate volunteer and i went to visit Torrance Memorial, Little Company of Mary, Spring Assisted Living Facility, and Driftwood Convalescent Home, we met with the Director of Volunteer Activities. We were invited to come to 3 of the 4 places with Lauren’s newly certified AAT dog, Pork Chop.

If anyone is interested in AAT, email me and i will send you the website to SPCA/LA in Long Beach where Pork Chop got certified. There are so many people in various stages of life that would really like petting a dog and reminiscing of their animals.

Lucky’s life began in Mexico. There he was shot and left for dead with eight pellets in his rear legs. A Good Samaritan found him on a trash heap and brought him to the Los Angeles area.

She could not afford to pay for the surgery he needed, so the Amanda Foundation stepped in. Each of his rear legs was broken in two places; after the necessary rods and pegs were inserted, he now looks like a Tinkertoy. He puts no weight on one leg, but the other works fine.

I adopted him eight years ago. He is the most wonderful, affectionate dog I’ve ever had, seeming to know that his life had been saved and forever grateful.

Last summer, he nearly died of an undiagnosed intestinal ailment that left him severely dehydrated. Dr. Ceman at Peninsula Pet Hospital was not at all certain that Lucky would survive, but he did. He was hospitalized and on an IV for two days. Needless to say, this was very expensive.

I was so grateful that I could afford to pay for his care and wanted to help others who could not. I set up the “Lucky Dog Fund” for animals in need like him whose owners would not be able to pay for such care and would have to have their beloved pets euthanized.

Please contact me at dkblk1@cox.net if you have questions, or send your tax-deductible donation payable to Whiskers and Tails (memo Lucky Dog Fund) to 34 Hilltop Circle, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.

95% of all contributions will go directly to the care of animals.

Thank you for your interest in the Lucky Dog Fund.

Sincerely,

Kathy Black
