Welcome to the Whiskers & Tails Foundation 2006

This is our first full year in business since establishing Whiskers & Tail Foundation for the prevention of animal cruelty. Our mission is to assist needy people with pets and to educate the public on the humane treatment of all animals. We carry out our mission through a variety of avenues.

One of our charters is to assist senior citizens with their companion animals by finding temporary housing for their beloved pets while they are hospitalized or in recovery. We also help to find forever homes in cases where death or terminal illness occurs. We have been proactive in financially assisting low-income individuals with spaying and neutering their pets, as well as providing vaccinations and basic medical needs for the animals to live a healthy life.

During the peak kitten season (March-June), we took in many un-weaned litters of kittens and bottled-fed them every 2-3 hours until they were ready for adoption. We also rescued dozens of dogs from the streets of Los Angeles, took care of their medical needs, then placed them in permanent or foster homes, or found their owners.

Another activity that supports our mission is to work with the many feral cat communities in our area. We trap/neuter or spay/release (TNR) and provide food and flea prevention medication. Most feeders (volunteers who are generally retired people living on Social Security or fixed incomes) can’t always afford to buy cat food for the feral cat communities that they care for. Out of the kindness of their hearts, they love taking care of the cats who live at various parks. All these feeders need is a little assistance, which makes this a good situation for people and cats.

Whiskers & Tails rescues barnyard animals from local shelters and individuals that are not zoned for these types of animals. We keep our roosters, hens, ducks, pigs, goats, etc.at a legally zoned property until they are adopted from Whiskers & Tails Foundation. While the animals are here, we teach student volunteers how to groom the animals and maintain their diets and surroundings.

We educate people at local events, such as, community and animal related fairs. Whiskers & Tails has a 10’ x 10’ booth that houses a 6-foot table where we display literature on “Living with Backyard Wildlife” (Raccoons, Opossums, Skunks, etc.). We also have information on low cost spaying and neutering, vaccinations, locations of breed specific animal shelters, local shelters and rescue groups. We are a great reference group, and we love to share information. We have students, girl scouts, and senior volunteers working in our booth.

One of the highlights of the year was helping a man who had a stroke while living in his RV with his beloved dog Misty. We fostered Misty while her human dad was in the hospital and then reunited him with his long-lost children—20 years after they last saw each other. His estranged family came to take him and Misty back to their home in Canyon Lake. This was a happy reunion for the entire family and Misty. We worked with the City of Torrance Police Dept. and Animal Control to make this happen and received public recognition for our efforts.

We have formed many good relationships with animal shelters, rescue groups, individuals, volunteers, city and county organizations, and supporters this past year, while many new ones are in the making.
In closing, I have noticed this foundation growing by word of mouth, good deeds, compassionate and honest people doing good works. I see the young middle school and high school students that volunteer and want to make this world a better place for all. They have options and are accountable for their actions, and they take responsibility—I find that awesome!

Non-Profit Organizations are programs of ATTRACTION; I see people wanting to help on a daily basis, a little, a lot, just to be part of this act of kindness and positive way of living.
Sincerely,

    Hello Lynne,

Where are you now living? In the Palos Verdes area? While reading some of your website, that’s where I have placed you since moving from Torrance. I know someone interested in more chickens and they live in the Portugese Bend area - do you still have any chicken rescues?

Thank you for you time and I enjoy reading your website.

Welcome to Whiskers & Tails Foundation

Where to begin…..All my life I had animals, but i wasn’t a very good guardian to my animals, my parents took care of them. I guess a miracle happened in my life and everything changed 180 degrees. At 31 years of age, i started becoming the person I am today, that’s 25 years ago. I think it was through all my life’s lessons prior to being 31 that changed my life’s direction towards animals. They were like me, needy for unconditional love and acceptance.

I started my new life with one cat, named Chuck, he was the runt of the litter and no one wanted him, my husband said, this cat is 1/3 the size of his siblings, he has runny eyes, coughing and sneezing, his mother didn’t take care of him, his siblings pounced on him, he was lethargic. Doomed from the beginning….that convinced me I wanted chuck in my life forever after….he was like me. I put Chuck in the palm of my hand, held him close to my heart on the ride home, it was a Sunday, I remember because I could not find a veterinarian to see him that day. Yes, Chuck had a long road ahead of him, he had a diseased pallet, all his food would go into his sinuses and head, then sneeze it out of his nose and mouth, which caused chronic infections,my poor Chuck visited the vet’s office most of his life. We build Chuck a special feeding post, my husband measured Chuck and determined where to put his foot pad and a octagonal platform that would purrfectly fit his plate, without falling. Chuck stood up with front paws on the foot pad, and ate his meals, this way gravity would force the food to his stomach not his head. It worked! we were so excited, Chuck took to this lifestyle very quickly. He was the smartest cat I ever had. Chuck opened my heart and my eyes to all the other animals in need, and that’s how it all began. Through the years after Chuck, hundreds of animals have been rescued and placed, we have helped many people with their animals in need of homes, medical attention, temporary housing, food, and spay & neutering. I ended up selling my house in Torrance, to buy a larger property to accommodate my animals, well, i found the house and property, not knowing that it came with a pot-bellied pig named Philomena, that was the clincher, i loved the little pig, the owner couldn’t take her to her new home. That’s how my barnyard rescue began, another surprise in the road, i rescued two more pot-bellied pigs from Carson shelter, Happy & Panda. I thought Phil would like some companions. Then, there was this pygmy goat named Valentine at Carson that was going to be put down, so i took him too….well, that was the beginning of my love affair with barnyard animals. I also became a vegetarian. Walk the way I talk. I believe this is my purpose in life, and I will dedicate my life to the animals as long as i am able.

Compassion for all animals,
